1. A Planet Changed by Technology

Earth already provides an example of how a technological civilization can modify its environment. Since industrialization, human activity has changed the concentration of atmospheric gases, illuminated cities at night, built structures visible from orbit, and filled nearby space with radio transmissions and satellites.

If similar changes occurred on an exoplanet, future telescopes might be able to recognize them—not by photographing alien cities directly, but by studying the planet’s light.

When an exoplanet passes in front of its star, some starlight filters through its atmosphere. Different molecules absorb particular wavelengths, leaving patterns in the planet’s spectrum. Astronomers can also attempt to separate light reflected or emitted by the planet from the much brighter light of its star.
