5. A Message or a Leak?

5. A Message or a Leak?

Not all artificial radio signals would have the same meaning.

Signal type

Description

Detectability

Intentional beacon

A powerful transmission deliberately aimed at other star systems

Potentially detectable over very large distances

Planetary radar

Strong, directional radar used for tracking or scientific observation

Detectable only from favorable directions and times

Communication leakage

Television, radio, mobile or satellite transmissions escaping into space

Usually weak and difficult to detect between stars

Engineered pulses

Short or repeating radio bursts designed to attract attention

Potentially distinctive if repeated and confirmed

Popular culture often portrays Earth as surrounded by a rapidly expanding, easily detectable sphere of television broadcasts. In reality, most everyday leakage becomes extremely faint with distance. Earth’s strongest and most detectable radio technosignatures are generally powerful, directional radar transmissions rather than ordinary television or mobile communications.
